On the final day of this retreat, he experienced a profound awakening in which the energy and knowledge of Reiki was revealed to him. He returned to Kyoto and established his first Reiki clinic, where he began treating others and sharing his practice with the world.
Sensei Usui went on to train a number of dedicated students before his passing in 1926, entrusting the continuation of his work to those he had taught. Among his most notable students was Dr. Chujiro Hayashi, a naval physician who further refined the practice and developed the hand placement techniques still used by practitioners today. Dr. Hayashi opened his own Reiki clinic in Tokyo, where he continued to treat patients and train new practitioners.
It was through Dr. Hayashi that Reiki found its way to the Western world. In the 1930s, a Japanese-American woman named Hawayo Takata traveled to Japan seeking healing and became a student of Dr. Hayashi. After completing her training and receiving her Master certification, she returned to Hawaii and dedicated her life to introducing Reiki to Western audiences. Mrs. Takata trained 22 Reiki Masters before her passing in 1980, ensuring that the practice would continue to grow and flourish.
Today, Reiki is practiced by millions of people across the globe and is recognized as a valuable complement to both conventional medicine and holistic healthcare. Its journey from a mountain in Japan to wellness centers and homes worldwide is a testament to the timeless nature of its healing power.
