Reiki is energy, pure and simple. Reiki is energy which may be used in a multitude of ways. Most notably, it is used to help heal the body through physical and spiritual means. Sensei Usui realized early in his discovery that Reiki was an energy requiring a certain level of control to maintain. He felt that teaching the way of Reiki was the best way to practice the channeling of this energy. Reiki Masters and practitioners are able to channel Reiki energy directly into their own body and spirit. They are able to take this channeled energy and distribute it outwardly to others. This is what Reiki sessions are; a way of channeling Reiki energy from one person to another.
The most well-known and ubiquitous form of Reiki, Usui Reiki, was created by Sensei Mikao Usui, a Japanese scholar born in 1865, who, in 1922, took a trip to the famed Mr. Kurama seeking spiritual enlightenment. During this trip, Mikao Usui experienced an out-of-world experience, which taught him there was an energy which helped spiritual and physical health and could be channeled. He called this energy Reiki, and after returning home from his journey, sought to teach others this energy and how to channel it. He discovered that teaching others to carry on this practice would allow Reiki to help others through its spiritual properties.
One of these pupils, Chujiro Hayashi, maintained several healing centers in Japan after Usui’s passing in 1926. He adapted Usui’s teachings to focus more on the physical benefits of Reiki more than the spiritual aspects of it. A near decade later, Mrs. Hwayo Takata, a Japanese emigrant who’d grown up in Hawaii, traveled to Japan to inform her parents of her sister’s passing, and to seek healing for her numerous illnesses, including a serious tumor. Upon meeting Mr. Hayashi, and going through daily Reiki sessions, Mrs. Takata found herself completely healed. Wanting to bring this revolutionary practice to a larger scope of people, Mr. Hayashi not only taught Mrs. Takata the ways of Reiki, but accompanied her to her home of Hawaii, and helped her train more Reiki Masters and bring Reiki to the Western World. By her passing in 1980, Mrs. Takata had taught an incredible 22 Reiki Masters herself, and is now credited with bringing Reiki to a word-wide audience.
Today, Reiki is practiced world-wide, and has many different methodologies and forms. Khris, a Reiki Master, practices a form of Reiki with a direct lineage to Sensei Usui himself, and combines the physical and spiritual benefits of Reiki to help others.
Channeling Reiki is a technique of hand placement on the body which combines aspects of physical and spiritual healing. Reiki Energy is an energy which may heal the mind, body, and spirit. Reiki Masters and Practitioners will use hand movements and other means to funnel this energy from them to the client.
A usual Reiki session will proceed with a client lying on the ground, a mat, a table, or any other flat surface. They may lie on their back or their stomach, depending on the session. While highly customizable, a typical Reiki session may include a practitioner playing music to start, or burning sage, or perhaps using sound bowls or other means to set the tone of the session. Then, the reiki practitioner will place their hands on, or slightly above the client’s body, making movements with the arms and hands to channel energy to the client.
Khris Hahn is a Reiki Master, receiving her attunment in 2018 under the Mikao Usui system. A typical session with Khris is unique in that she uses a culmination of multiple styles of Reiki to give the best experience. A person will lie on their back while Khris smudges the air (smudging is a smoke which clears and cleanses the air) to start the session. She then places various crystals on the chakras of the client, and scans her hands along the body of the client.
